Keeping Your Restored Studebaker Avanti Looking New
The Avanti is one of the most distinctive American GTs ever built — a cream-colored example with black hood accents and chrome details still stops traffic decades after it left South Bend. If you own one, here's how to keep it looking the way it deserves.
1. Wash It the Right Way
- Use the two-bucket method (one soap, one rinse) to avoid dragging grit across the paint
- Never wash in direct sunlight — water spots etch into clear coat
- Use microfiber only; sponges and brushes scratch
2. Protect That Gloss
A hand-applied sealant twice a year, plus occasional quality wax, keeps the finish deep and easy to clean. Pay attention to the painted areas behind the wheels where road grit collects.
3. Care for the Chrome
The Avanti's chrome window pillars, door handles, and bumpers need regular wiping with a soft cloth. For light pitting, specialized chrome polish works wonders — but go gentle, as aggressive polishing removes plating.
4. Mind the Hood Vents
Those black aerodynamic vents are a signature Avanti detail — and a trap for dust and grime. A soft detailing brush keeps them clean without scratching the surrounding paint.
5. Tire and Wheel Care
Whitewall tires are low-maintenance but need the right cleaner — one made for whitewalls, not general tire dressing. Harsh chemicals can yellow the white rubber. Clean the chrome rims with a dedicated wheel brush and pH-balanced cleaner.
6. Drive It
The best maintenance for any restored classic is regular, gentle use. Cars that sit deteriorate: seals dry out, brakes rust, fuel goes stale. A Sunday drive keeps everything lubricated and lets you spot small issues before they become big ones.
7. Store It Properly
When parked, keep the Avanti in a garage, under a breathable (not plastic) cover, away from direct sunlight. Keep the fuel topped off to limit condensation in the tank.
